Interweberverse! This season's super sentai is the best tribute to heroes in past seasons I could have hoped for. by the time we hit episode 11, we've have specific tributes to Gaoranger (Power Rangers Wild Force), Dekaranger (SPD), Magiranger (Mystic Force), and Gekiranger (Jungle Fury). The 11th episode started off a two-parter that pays tribute to Shinkenger (PR Samurai). Takeru and crew don't show up, but we do get to see from Kaoru. This was a smart move for a few reasons. First, she is awesome. We didn't see too much of her in Shinkenger because she was only a means to an end, but there was so much potential in this character but there was just no time left in the season, and she really didn't fit into the movies as she relinquished her powers and heritage to Takeru when she adopted him. Kaoru was strong, talented, driven, and most importantly, she knew when to stop (unlike most red rangers).
Secondly, I already went through 50 episodes and two movies recently with the Shinkengers, and there's not much surprise left in their story, at least not for just a two-parter. If more time had passed and the actors allowed to age up, then you could have created any amount of back story for the current adventure and it would have worked. but, as it's only been a little over 7 months since they last gave an appearance (in the Goseiger VS movie), that saying it's been any amount of years is a little unbelievable. So, rather than do a story about the main team, we have the adorably stern little Kaoru and her manservant.
Finally, and the main reason why I was excited for her to show up, we the audience don't know what happened to her after she left the Shiba estate and her manservant (I really can't remember his name) tried talking her into finding a husband. The Shinkengers had 2 more battles (with Goseiger, and the Great War), lost their powers, and went back to an everyday life. The 18th head of the Shiba clan left out attentions at least a year prior to this, and hasn't been mentioned since. It was nice to see her scold Tanba (THAT'S HIS NAME! NOW I REMEMBER!) again, show more personality now that she has less responsibilities, and defend her former comrade's legacy as Super Sentai.
I won't share anymore details than that, but if you haven't seen episodes 11 and 12 of Gokaiger, you definitely should. Any fan of Shinkenger would find it a very nice nod to the series.
